Normal People by Sally Rooney - Review

I had seen a lot of people hype this book up so when it came to me reading it, i was a bit nervous i wouldn't like it as much as everyone else. But... i do love it!

I loved reading this book because to me it has everything a book should have: strong characters, a strong plot line and a decent style of writing. I was impressed with the way Sally Rooney led this book, i haven't read a book that was set out this way before.

One big thing i liked that happened throughout the book is the two main characters' development. You witness them both grow as individuals but also together.

Connell and Marianne have known each other from a young age, both two very different people but one thing in common, they like each other. They brought out many emotions in me whilst reading; sadness, happiness, frustration that they wouldn't admit things properly to each other. I haven't read a book with such strong characters in a while and Connell the main male character, his vulnerability was heartbreaking at times but so real and relevant to the shift in mental health awareness that is happening at the moment.

This is a very different kind of romance book, but it was refreshing to read something that didn't have the stereotypical 'meet, fall in love, have a few problems, then live happily ever after' story line. It had more depth and was a more realistic telling of what happens when you love someone.

Normal People is a very apt name for the book, the people are so normal in it, you don't have a crazy story line that takes you to a faraway magical kingdom, just two people from a small town in Ireland living in reality.

You will like this book if you're looking for a different, raw kind of romance with people who are trying to find their way in the world and figure out what life and relationships are all about.

You may shed a little tear at the end like i did, but it's worth a few tears.

I give this book 5 stars.
